Virginia Species to Hunt

White-tailed deer, black bear and turkey are the prevalent big game species to pursue in Virginia. Considered a nuisance animal, feral hogs offer an open season year around if you can find them. A conservation team is also bringing back elk to the state which were once native there.

Years ago, as Virginia’s population increased, their original wild game elk numbers declined to the point of extirpation. There’s now a small but growing elk herd of around 200 in Virginia. As those numbers increase, visitors to the state could have even more options in the future.

If you’re interested in small game, you’ll find resident wild game birds such as pheasant, quail and grouse. There also is an abundance of rabbits and squirrels.

Migratory waterfowl frequent the state and offer even more prospects. Commonly hunted waterfowl include geese, ducks, brant and swans. You can go after woodcock, rails, coots, snipe, moorhens, gallinules and doves as well. Many an out-of-state hunter gets lost in the natural beauty and variety of Virginia waterfowl hunting.

Predatory game such as coyote, bobcat and fox offer an exciting alternative. Test your hunting skills to the max by calling in these elusive and intelligent prowlers.

An Outdoor Wild Game Gem

wild gameAlthough you may find similar game to put your sights on elsewhere, you’ll be hard pressed to find them in a more stunning habitat. From Mount Rogers topping out at over 5,000 feet to the mighty James River, you’re in for a one-of-a-kind hunting experience.

Much of Virginia’s 200,000 acres of public game land is open to hunting. You can easily put together a successful DIY hunt even without private land use. While you’re working hard at your day job, don’t forget that sometimes you need a break. The sweet-smelling pines and hemlocks of Virginia are the perfect backdrop for such a respite.
