PX Hero “JAFO II” Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) Review

Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) PX HeroWe cover safety in the outdoors a lot on this site. No one wants to be out in the woods and has an accident. Normally accidents and injuries are the last things that we are concerned with when it comes to hiking and hunting. None of us think that we will be the one to slip and break an ankle on the trail, Have a slip from a tree stand and slice our hand open, or God forbid get shot by another hunter! But you know what, these things happen every day in the outdoors and that is where the PX Hero Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) comes in.

What is an Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK)

The IFAK came on the scene starting as far back as 1967 when in the later stages of the Vietnam War Military command found the need for Marines to carry their own personal First Aid Kit. These Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) increases individual warfighter capabilities to provide Self-Aid/Buddy-Aid and provides interventions for the two leading causes of death on the battlefield, severe hemorrhage, and inadequate airway.

Todays IFAK kits have come a long way from the original. Although the original IFAK kits were revolutionary in their time they were little more than a home cut and scrape band-aid box.

Containing:

  • Battle Dressing
  • Bottle of Iodine Water Purification Tablets
  • Bottle of Wound Disinfectant

PX Hero “JAFO II” IFAK Kit

The PX Hero company is a group of Army veterans who knows more than anyone what is required to treat wounds in the field. Through their years of experience, they have helped create a low cost highly superior version of the original Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) for civilian and military use alike. PX Hero not only sent over the JAFO II First Aid Kit with the basic supply package but they also included in their Trauma Supply Kit as well for review. So let’s look at the contents of each of the packages and then the unit as a whole.

Overall the Wilderness First Aid Manual is a welcome addition to the IFAK and could mean the difference between life and death.

PX Hero Trauma Resupply Kit

  • [1] Rapid Application Tourniquet (RATS)
  • [1] BloodBlocker ® Wound & Trauma Dressing | 6″ x 4.25″

  • [1] Argyle ® Nasopharyngeal Airway | 6.5 mm
  • [1] Celox ® | Hemostatic Agent | 2 g.
  • [1] Latex Gloves
  • [1] First Aid & CPR Reference Book

The Trauma Resupply Kit is the kit that your glad you have when you need it but pray that you never have to use. This kit is for your major life threatening injuries or events that need immediate attention. My favorite part of this kit is the RATS Tourniquet and the Nasopharyngeal Airway, these two items alone cover the two most life threatening situations and can cover a large variety of injuries! No Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) would be complete without a quick clot Hemostatic Agent to be used after the RATS tourniquet has been applied.

PX Hero “JAFO II” IFAK Bag

Although the contents of the Individual First Aid Kit are important, just as important is the packaging and transportation system that you use to store all these items. This is where the PX Hero JAFO II shines, having features that are not only unique to the PX Hero brand but you would not find on higher priced IFAK kits sold elsewhere. Coming in at just under 1lb 9oz fully loaded with all the contents listed above it will not add a substantial load to your existing hunting/hiking pack. Being made out of a 600 Denier Ballistic Nylon it is built to last and the external molle system is an excellent addition. The external molle webbing adds additional storage for more gear or items. With multiple ways to attach this IFAK to your bag/belt or external load, this is an excellent addition to your pack.

Internally the JAFO II features multiple pouches, a zippered pocket and more than enough elastic retention areas to fit all your medical needs and more. I was able to neatly organize all the items listed above in a manner that they could quickly be accessed in the event that the unthinkable happened. With the more immediate needed items in an emergency in the front and the bandaids for cuts and scrapes neatly tucked in the back where they could be retrieved in a less than an emergency situation, although still in a timely manner. One of my favorite internal features is the retention synch cord that allows the user to set the amount the pack opens, the last thing you want to happen when time is of the essence is to have your IFAK sling open and spill all the items you need in the mud and dirt. This is one feature that is exclusive to the PX Hero Brand and I hate to think what situation came to the conclusion that this was a must needed item in their kit but I’m glad it is there now.

PX Hero Review Wrap Up

The Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) is just one of those items that you have to have! I personally have an IFAK in every pack, our house and in both, our cars, Although not as advanced as the PX Hero. This is just one of those items that you never want to have to use, but still remains one of the most important and overlooked aspects of the outdoors. If you are an outdoorsman and don’t have one then you need to go look at getting a PX Hero before your next trip to the outdoors. This is one of the nicest IFAK’s that I have had the pleasure to use and I truly believe that you won’t be disappointed when you purchase one for yourself.

Traveling the world I have had the chance to experience the wonders of nature in many different places, meeting many different people and tasting wild game that the normal person would not get to experience. Although these experiences have kept me away from home, it has instilled a deep passion of hunting and fishing in my blood.
