After losing a leg sniffing out roadside bombs in Afghanistan this fate full hero will finally get a retirement that she deserves, Being the first US Marine Corps Service Dog Awarded.

Lucca the US Marine Corps Service Dog awarded, who served with US troops on more than 400 missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Over a 6 year span Lucca helped protect our men and women of the military and now will be recognized for her actions.

US Marine Corps Service Dog awarded

On April 5th 2016 Luca received the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) Dickin Medal. The PSDA Dickin Medal is the highest award that any animal can receive whilst serving in a military conflict. Often referred to as the animals Victoria Cross it was instituted in 1943 by founder Maria Dickin CBE. The PDSA Recognizes animals for outstanding acts of bravery or devotion to duty.

The People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) Dickin Medal has only ben awarded 67 times since 1943. Among Lucca 32 pigeons, 31 dogs and 3 horses and 1 cat hold this prestigious US Marine Corps Service Dog Awarded.

Lucca  US Marine Corps Service Dog awarded in fieldLuca being the first ever US Marine Corps dog to receive the medal “For tireless service to the military communities of the United States of America and coalition partners from 2006 to 2012”. With her handler Gunnery Sargent Christopher Willingham Stating that it is an “Incredible Honor”.

“It is very humbling to be part of this entire process,” he said. “I think more importantly is that Lucca’s accomplishments are going to help bring awareness and recognition to all our military working dogs and their handlers.”

Lucca was on a winning streak until March of 2012 when she lost her leg and suffered chest burns in Afghanistan’s Helmand province. Although Lucca was the first US Marine Corps Service Dog Awarded, hopefully she will not be the last! We salute you Lucca!
